About EJ
EJ, formerly the East Jordan Iron Works, was founded in 1883 by William E. Malpass and his father-in-law Richard W. Round when they established a foundry in the town of East Jordan, Michigan, USA. Originally called the Round and Malpass Foundry, they produced cast parts for the lumber industry, machinery, ships, agricultural equipment, and railroad boards. In 1886, William’s brother Jordan joined the company, and the business was renamed to the East Jordan Iron Works.
In the 1920s, as the lumber industry dropped in significance, East Jordan Iron Works shifted its focus to street castings, adapter castings, fire hydrants, water works valves, and other various industrial castings. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, the company focused on adopting new technologies and processes, such as automation, high-pressure molding,
automatic sand processing, and mechanized casting handling systems, operating what was at the time the largest automated molding line.
The 1990s and 2000s were a period of expansion and acquisition for East Jordan Iron Works, building a new factory in Oklahoma to support growing markets in the United States, as well as Central and South America, and purchased Cavanagh Foundry, Norinco, McCoy Construction Castings, and HaveStock. In 2012, East Jordan Iron Works and its affiliates began doing business under one name and brand, EJ. As it continued to increase its global presence, EJ acquired more companies, including Bernard Cassart & Cie in Belgium, Syracuse Castings Sales Corporation and Syracuse Castings West Corporation, Etheridge Foundry & Machine Company, E.A. Quirin Machine, GMI Composites, Mueller Canada Ltd., GAV GmbH, Peter Savage Ltd., Integrated Ducting Systems, and Schacht and Bauetechnik Vertriebs GmbH.
EJ is still owned by members of the Malpass family, who actively manage the company and maintain its values. EJ’s corporate headquarters continue to be situated in East Jordan, Michigan, USA.
