About Harley-Davidson, Inc.
Harley-Davidson, Inc. is an American based manufacturer of motorcycles, founded in 1903 by William S. Harley and others. Beginning with the construction of motorized bikes, the founders eventually set forth what would become the future of motorcycle design. In 1905, Harley-Davidson began advertising their engines with the intention of allowing creators to utilize them on bikes as “do-it-yourself” projects. That same year, they also began producing motorcycles on a limited basis, and they later moved from their original shed to a factory to increase their production capability. In 1907, Harley graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and the company began to expand upon their facilities and incorporated. Leading into the first World War, Harley-Davidson continued to develop their facilities, also introducing various new models of motorcycles. During World War I, Harley-Davidson served as a major supplier of motorcycles for the war effort, and the U.S. military purchased over 20,000 units.
In 1917, Harley-Davidson also launched a bicycle line for civilian use, marketing towards men and youth with the intention of garnering more customers for their motorcycles. Nevertheless, this plan failed and bicycle development was discontinued by 1923. Nevertheless, their motorcycles continued to rise in sales, and they became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world by 1920. With their new success, they continued to improve upon their designs, introducing new gas tanks and hardware. With the coming of the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson went on to produce new lines of motorcycles, also expanding internationally with a new line in Japan.
During World War II, Harley-Davidson once again became a large supplier for the army, serving as one of the only two American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression. At this time, Harley-Davidson suspended their civilian production as they focused on bringing new models that could fit the various needs and applications needed for the war effort. After the war, the company faced various set-backs, and they were forced to conduct major restructuring into the 1980’s. To garner more customers, Harley-Davidson focused on the production of retro-style motorbikes from their earlier years, and this proved to be a success.
In more recent years, Harley-Davidson has continued to improve upon their designs and have introduced new motorcycle lines for civilian use. Currently, the company is focused on partnerships with various companies and entities, as well as has focused on expansion of operations and production in various countries across the globe.
