About IBM
IBM was first established in 1911 through the amalgamation of four businesses, thus forming the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). As CTR, the company began operation with a variety of products, including the sale and leasing of machinery. By the end of their first decade of business, the company began to expand into various foreign markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. In 1924, the company was rebranded as International Business Machines, and soon after most subsidiaries were merged together. IBM also found success in the 1930’s with the release of their tabulating equipment, of which was utilized for the Social Security Act and various foreign operations. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, IBM made many breakthroughs, including creating the first practical artificial intelligence, working with space exploration, and introducing their first computer system. IBM also had the pleasure of releasing Universal Product Code, created by one of their engineers in 1974. With financial losses in the late 1990’s, IBM oversaw major restructuring during the 2000’s, and they sold many of their divisions to focus their efforts on artificial intelligence and computers. Recently, IBM has also begun acquisitions once again, obtaining various companies such as The Weather Company and Red Hat.
